Bedtime stories

Posted in BOOKS by jumpmagicjump on October 22, 2009

It may be that many of you are already familiar with this book, but I’d like to recommend that you to read Generation X by Douglas Coupland. The recent release of his new book Generation A (I still haven’t had the time to get my hands on it) is a good excuse to revisit his fantastic novel that described a generation that reached adulthood in the late 80s.

A tale explained through the eyes of Andy who leaves the mainstream to go to live in the Mojave desert in California. Twenty-somethings Andy, Dag and Claire spend most of their time telling Bedtime Stories to each other and living a minimalist life. Yes, they are lost, but they know what they don’t want to become.

Neologisms sit at the bottom of each page which help you understand the world the three characters live in (not different from ours at all):

– Platonic Shadow: A nonsexual friendship with a member of the opposite sex.

– Safety net-ism: The belief that there will always be a financial and emotional safety net to buffer life’s hurts. Usually parents.

– Tele-parablizing: Morals used in everyday life that derive from TV sitcom plots: “That’s just like the episode where Jan lost her glasses!”

This Sunday it’s Bedtime Stories time at The Old Blue Last too, bring some old books and clothes to swap and go home with a new story (and outfit) to look forward to!
